Honda Chain Maintanence
The chain on the CBR250RR should be lubricated using an appropriate lubricant approximately every 500 kilometers. In wet weather or dusty conditions the chain & sprockets should be cleaned and lubricated more frequently.
Specification
The CBR250R and RR use the same 428 series chain (OEM DID 428 VS1(x-ring)) with 136 links. standard fitted length is around 134.5 links.
Sprockets are steel and rear sprockets are different for MC19 and MC22 models. The former having 54 tooth, while the latter uses 52 teeth as standard. Both share the same hardened steel 17 tooth front specification.
Preparation
Ideally chain should be cleaned and warm before it's lubricated, a 10 minute ride beforehand should be sufficient.
Cleaning
Clean the chain off using kerosene or other paraffin based cleaner. Brush sidelinks clear of grease and dirt also. Wipe clean chain off with a clean rag. take care to clean sprockets also.
When Chain Is clean
The first step depends on whether you have a mate to help or not.
With Bike Stand- Place the stand so that the rear tire is lifted clear off the ground with bike in neutral, rotate rear tyre and spray lubricant onto the inside of the rollers (bottom chain) rotating the tyre in the forward direction only.
Without Bike Stand With Extra Person- Get someone to lean the bike over onto the stand so that only front tyre and stand are contacting the ground. Ensure that stand is fully down first! The rear tire will now be off the ground. Assistant should maintain bike on angle until lubrication is complete
Without Bike Stand By Yourself- This is the hardest method as it much easier getting some help or a bike stand. The best way if alone is to find at least 5 meters of space, and lubricate chainin small sections, rolling bike forward after completion of each section.
Alternatively you can rotate the wheel by attempting to lift the back of the bike off the ground by rear of the tyre which will force the back wheel to spin. You can make it easier by using your shoulder to help lift from under the tail piece.
Final Steps
- Rotate rear tyre, wiping away excess oil and dirt from chain with a rag
- Once chain is clean, apply lubricant onto chain from rear
- Rotate tire ensuring that chain is comprehensively coated on both the inside & outside facing parts, so that the lubricant can seep into the inner rollers and the 'o' rings (x or xw ring chains have special grooved o rings)
- Allow lubricant to sit for at least 10 minutes after application
- Ensure both tires are free of any misfired lubricant as it can be slippery
- Expect lubricant to spray onto tyre rim on first ride
